Know Your Rights: New Flight Refund Rules
Good news for travelers! The Department of Transportation's new refund rules that took effect at the end of 2024 have strengthened passenger protections. Here's what you need to know:
When You're Entitled to Automatic Refunds
• If your flight is canceled for ANY reason
• If departure/arrival times change by 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international)
• If your departure/arrival airport changes
• If your itinerary has more connections added
• If you’re downgraded to a lower class of service
Additional Protections
• Delayed Baggage Protection: If your checked luggage is delayed, you're entitled to a baggage fee refund if it's not delivered within 12 hours (domestic) or 15-30 hours (international)
• Speedy Refund Processing: Airlines must process refunds quickly • Within 7 business days for credit card purchases • 20 calendar days for other payment methods ️
• Important Reminder: These refunds apply only if you DECLINE the airline's alternative options (like rebooking or vouchers).
How to Get Your Refund
Contact your airline directly through their customer service channels as soon as your flight is affected. If you want to know exactly what each airline has agreed to in the event of delays or cancellations, just use this handy chart.
Most airlines allow you to request refunds through their websites or mobile apps. Be prepared to provide your booking reference, flight details, and the reason for the refund request. If the airline fails to process your eligible refund within the required timeframe, you can file a complaint with the DOT.
